As Australia’s national law school, we have a unique responsibility to shape and reform laws and policies that advance justice outcomes for Indigenous Australians. Your legal education at ANU will be enriched by our focus on issues central to Indigenous Australians in addition to experiential and practical learning experiences, from Deep Listening on Country to our ongoing partnership with Kimberley Community Legal Services.

Join us in our inaugural Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the land on which the ANU campus rests and those who have been its traditional custodians for millennia.

Led by Aunty Matilda House-Williams, a Ngambri, Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri elder, and Professor Asmi Wood, 2020 ANU Indigenous Alumnus of the Year and a scholar of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Law, this event is an opportunity for you to learn more about the traditional Ngunnawal-Ngambri custodians, customs and Country, as well as to meet fellow students and your lecturers.

Among our academics will be Associate Professor Anthony Hopkins, Director of Clinical and Internship Courses. Dr Hopkins’ semi-biographical book, Belonging: A Novel, will be presented to each law student. Inspired by his time as a lawyer at the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service in Alice Springs, the book provides an intimate window into the experiences of those caught in the crossroads of colonialism and the criminal justice system.
