Living in Canberra

Ranked in the Top 25 Student Cities four years in a row, Canberra is as much a university town as it is a city of policy, politics and culture. Our city is welcoming and safe, with students accounting for about 25 percent of the population of Canberra.

Canberra is consistently named as one of the most liveable cities in the world and was listed by Lonely Planet in 2018 as the third best city in the world to visit. Canberra offers a different cultural experience to other Australian capitals. It’s also incredibly easy to get around – the city has the shortest commute times of any major Australian city and a newly opened light-rail network.

Student experience

ANU values the importance of a positive cultural experience. You’ll be warmly welcomed into a safe, inclusive and collaborative environment that facilitates immersion and offers a strong sense of togetherness and community spirit.

As a student at Australia’s national law school, you’ll benefit from opportunities that are unique to studying law in the nation’s capital, the city where federal laws and policies are made. Our proximity to the High Court of Australia, Commonwealth courts and federal agencies offers unparalleled access to legal practitioners, members of the judiciary and government policymakers, many of whom are ANU Law alumni.

ANU also offers students more than 200 societies and clubs to join. There are also regular social, lunchtime and competitive games, as well as sporting clubs to participate in.

International opportunities and internships

We offer a range of clinical courses, internships and exchange opportunities to allow our students to gain professional experience during their legal education.

Internships are available within a variety of organisations, government agencies and non-government organisations in Australia, Asia and the Pacific, the United States, the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. Many of our international students choose to undertake an international internship during their ANU law degree so that they can gain practical experience and begin to build their professional network in their home country before they graduate.

Global careers start here

When you graduate from ANU you will become part of a highly connected network of over 20,000 global law alumni.

Our alumni have achieved excellence in Australia and around the world, not just in the area of law but in international business, diplomacy, politics, public policy, humanitarian aid, banking and finance.
