Matthew is a fifth-year Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Politics, Philosophy and Economics student. He recently undertook a College-arranged internship at the Darwin Community Legal Service (DCLS).
How did the ANU College of Law internship program influence your future education and career choices?
Like many law students, I wasn't sure I ever wanted to practise law at all. My internship changed my mind entirely, opening my eyes to the rewarding nature of helping people navigate legal problems.
What was your favourite part of the program?
My favourite part was definitely the wide variety of matters which I had the good fortune of assisting with during my internship, from superannuation disputes to adult guardianship appeals and everything in between.
Would you recommend undertaking an internship to other ANU Law students?
Definitely. The professional experience, the exposure to professional networks, and the fun are just things you do not get in the classroom. Special thanks to DCLS and all the staff, who were so welcoming and generous with their time, and to the ANU College of Law for making it possible.
