This is a clinical program based in a social justice legal practice environment. Students participate in the work of Legal Aid ACT’s Youth Law Centre focused on service delivery for people between the ages of 12-25. While analysing the various roles that lawyers can undertake in the social justice sector, students will focus on community legal education, learn about representation principles for children’s lawyers, systemic injustice in the care system and current law reform issues in relation to the needs of young people in the ACT. Students will develop knowledge of the law and procedure which underpins the performance of any tasks related to the care or crime jurisdiction as it applies to the representation of young people in the ACT as well as the Legal Aid Act 1977. Some pre-reading will be required for this clinic.
