Below are the student expectations and requirements for law students undertaking a field trip as part of their course, such as Legal Education for True Justice: Indigenous Perspectives and Deep Listening on Country.
1. Students must attend all seminars, classes, and any orientation sessions in person, as scheduled for the course.
2. Failure to maintain 100% in-person attendance will result in a grade of NCN (fail) for the course.
2.1 Exceptions to this attendance requirement will only be considered in exceptional and unforeseen circumstances beyond the student’s control.
2.2 Any request for an exception must be submitted in writing to the course convener prior to the relevant seminar or class and must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation.
2.3 Exceptional circumstances that may justify absence include, but are not limited to:
2.3.1 Medical reasons (student injury, illness or medical condition) of such significance that presence in the seminar/clinic is not possible.
2.3.2 Family/personal reasons (family injury or illness, bereavement) of such significance that presence in the seminar/clinic/practicum is not possible.
2.3.3 Please note that work commitments, travel (overseas or interstate), course clashes, residence outside the ACT, or personal commitments are not considered valid reasons to warrant an absence.
3. Students who accept their offer into the course are expected to remain enrolled and complete all assessment requirements. If a student cannot meet the attendance requirements, they must contact enquiries.clgp@anu.edu.au at least two weeks prior to the course start date.
4. Students who withdraw from the course after two weeks prior to the course start date —or after the course has commenced—without meeting the criteria in 3.3 may be deemed ineligible for future clinical or practicum course offers.
5. Students must adhere to the ANU Student Code of Conduct when undertaking the course. All communication must be respectful, inclusive, and free from discrimination or harassment.
6. The ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy does not accept liability for a student’s failure to meet course expectations, course requirements, or legal and health obligations—including compliance with government directives or health protocols.
7. Students who have a medical condition that prevents them from attending the in-person components of the course will be deemed unfit to participate in the field trip and are therefore ineligible for the course.
8. The course convener/s may issue directives to students during the field trip for reasons related to health, safety, or group wellbeing. These may include requiring a student to return home or to complete a modified version of the course. Wherever possible, the Associate Dean (Education) will be consulted before such decisions are made. Students must comply with any such directive. Failure to comply will result in an NCN (fail) and may result in disciplinary action.
