Uluru
Legal Education for True Justice: Indigenous Perspectives and Deep Listening on Country

This on-country intensive course (LAWS4307 / LAWS6307) aims to equip students with knowledge to critically assess law's history, characteristics and impacts from the perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Central to the course is the examination of the adequacy of the current state of Australian legal education, legal practice, law and justice in relation to First Nations peoples, with a view to possibilities for reform.

This course involves an on-country experience in Central Australia, beginning in Mparntwe/ Alice Springs and travelling through to Uluru.

In 2025, the field trip will take place over 7 days, from Saturday 5 April to Saturday 12 April.

Change of Itinerary

Please note that the itinerary is subject to change based on input from our on-site partners and accommodation availability. Selected students will receive the final itinerary prior to the field trip; however, external factors, such as weather conditions or logistical issues, may necessitate last-minute adjustments. Students should not submit applications based on the expectation of visiting specific sites (e.g., Uluru), as these locations cannot be guaranteed.

Cost of Field Trip and Travel Grant Available

The cost of the field trip is evaluated $1,600 - $2,000 per student.

Selected students will automatically be 'pre-approved' for an ANU Law Careers and Employability Travel Grant of $1,300 AUD.

The College will also cover the cost of accommodations for the first and last night of the trip.

Please note students are expected to cover any additional costs exceeding the amount covered by the travel grant.

Eligibility & Selection Guidelines

The course is available to current ANU students who:

  • Are domestic or International; and
  • Are enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) either as a single or flexible double degree at the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy; or
  • Are enrolled in a Juris Doctor at the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy; and
  • Have completed or be completing five 1000 or 6100 level LAWS courses.

A panel will review all applications and is responsible for selecting students for this opportunity. The selection process involves a holistic assessment of a student’s capacity and aptitude for indigenous justice. It also involves consideration of how much a student will benefit from participating in this course and field trip.

Fitness and Expectations Requirements

Fitness Requirement

The on-country experience component of this course involves activities such as bushwalking and camping, often in extreme heat. These, and other, physical activities are integral to the course’s 'deep listening on Country' pedagogy and cannot be modified. Accordingly, students must possess a reasonable level of physical fitness to participate safely and meet the course requirements.

Students applying for LAWS4307 / LAWS6307 must be able to:

  1. Undertake extended walking, including over uneven terrain.
  2. Walk and stand for extended periods in hot conditions.
  3. Camp in remote locations with limited facilities.
  4. Participate in physically active fieldwork in outdoor environments.
  5. Engage with emotionally challenging material and discussions.
  6. Behave in a constructive, respectful and collaborative manner when travelling in a group for an extended period.

Students with a pre-existing medical condition, or concerns about their ability to meet the fitness requirements, must obtain medical clearance from a qualified health professional confirming their capacity to satisfy the Fitness Requirement

Students selected for the course will be required to submit this medical clearance with the ANU Travel Approval form, in accordance with ANU travel policy.

Failure to provide the required clearance, where it would have been reasonable to do so based on known medical conditions or prior concerns, may be considered a breach of the ANU Student Code of Conduct. This may result in removal from the course and/or referral for disciplinary action under university policy.
