Anne Orford is Melbourne Laureate Professor and Michael D Kirby Chair of International Law at Melbourne Law School, and Visiting Professor of Law and John Harvey Gregory Lecturer on World Organization at Harvard Law School. She researches and teaches in the areas of public international law, international dispute settlement, international economic law, and climate change. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and a past President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law. She has been a visiting professor at Université Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), Lund University, and the University of Gothenburg, a Senior Emile Noël Research Fellow at NYU School of Law, and presented a special course at the Hague Academy of International Law in 2021. Her publications include International Law and the Politics of History (Cambridge University Press, 2021), Pensée Critique et Pratique du Droit International (Pedone, 2020), International Authority and the Responsibility to Protect (Cambridge University Press, 2011), Reading Humanitarian Intervention (Cambridge University Press, 2003), and The Oxford Handbook of the Theory of International Law (Oxford University Press, 2016) (co-editor). She has been appointed Visiting Legal Fellow at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for 2022-23.

Hugh Watson is Director of the Climate Negotiations and Strategy Section in the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water.  He led Australia’s team of negotiators at COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021.  Previously, he served as Director of DFAT’s Multilateral Human Rights Policy section, supporting Australia’s engagement in the UN Human Rights Council during our 2018-2020 term on the Council.  He also worked as a disarmament and international law negotiator while on posting at Australia’s Mission to the UN in Geneva from 2015-2018.  Prior to this he served as Executive Officer to the Secretary of DFAT in 2014-15, and as a lawyer in DFAT’s International Law Section from 2011-2014.  He joined DFAT as a graduate in 2004 and was posted to Tokyo from 2006-2010.  

Chiara Angeloni is a Senior Legal Officer at the Office of International Law in the Attorney-General’s Department. She advises Government on a range of matters of international law and policy, including domestic implementation of international obligations and engagement with UN human rights treaty bodies and working groups. She practices across international human rights law, refugee law, climate law, environmental law and law of the sea. Chiara is also Secretary of the Australian Branch of the International Law Association. Before joining the Department, Chiara held a range of advisory and policy roles spanning labour law, environment policy, multicultural policy and Indigenous health policy. She is a graduate of the University of Sydney (BA (Hons)/LLB) and the Australian National University (LLM).
