LAWS4301/LAWS6301 Law & Development Clinic is intended to provide students an introduction into law-related aspects of international development, both as a scholarly discipline and as a professional field. The clinic provides an immersive experience in a developing country, with students working with local partners while under the supervision of the course convenor. The local partners all work to support legal and judicial reform, strengthen the rule-of-law, and promote and protect human rights.
Through work with local partners, students will discover the challenges of development and human rights in a post-conflict setting, gain insights about the meaning of the rule of law in developing countries, and the practice of international development aid in the promotion of human rights norms and international best practices to promote the rule of law. It will also give students the opportunity to experience the different types of potential careers available in the field of Law & Development.
As part of the course, students will get the opportunity to travel and complete a field trip in Cambodia. Students will travel from 1 January 2025 to 15 February 2025. The course officially starts on 29 October 2024 and will conclude after students return to Australia.
Eligibility and Selection criteria
The course is only open to ANU LLB/LLB(Hons) and Juris Doctor (JD) students. Bachelor of Laws (Hons) students may only apply if they have completed five LAWS1000 and completed LAWS2250 International Law at the time of submitting your application. Juris Doctor students may only apply if they have completed five LAWS6100 level compulsory courses. Priority may be given to later year students.
Applicants will be shortlisted with consideration to GPA, year of study, resume and written/video responses to questions in the application form.

Students must formally apply to participate in this clinic. Only successful applicants will be provided with a permission code to enrol in LAWS4301/LAWS6301 Law and Development Clinic.

The expected cost of the overall trip is $7,020 - $9,090 AUD. This estimate includes accommodation, flights, transport, food, etc. Any trip expenses exceeding the $4,500 NCP grant must be covered by the applicant. Please refer to the table below for a detailed breakdown of the expected costs.

Field Trip and Learning Outcomes
As part of the course, students will get the opportunity to travel and complete a field trip in Cambodia. Students will travel from 1 January 2025 to 15 February 2025. The course officially starts on 29 October 2024 and will conclude after students return to Australia.
For Summer 2025, the clinic will assign students to projects supporting local partners consisting of non-government organisations (NGOs) in Cambodia. The clinic will last approximately seven weeks, with students dedicating time to their respective NGOs that is roughly divided between two weeks of remote work from Australia and five weeks of on-site immersion in Cambodia.
Through work with their respective NGOs, students will discover the challenges of development and human rights in a post-conflict setting, gain insights about the meaning of the rule of law in developing countries, and the practice of international development aid in the promotion of human rights norms and international best practices to promote the rule of law. It will also give students the opportunity to experience the different types of potential careers available in the field of Law & Development.
Learning Outcome
The course aims to:
- provide students with a clinical experience in a developing country, to see firsthand the legal and social justice issues arising in a developing country.
- guide and support students in identifying, developing and applying practical legal skills in Law and Development.
- develop students' critical understanding of the role of lawyers in providing access to justice in a developing country.
- contextualise the study of law and student learning in the wide range of other law courses.
- encourage, promote and validate student aspirations to promote access to justice and equality before the law specifically in relation to disadvantaged people and communities.
- encourage students to critically consider the effect of the law and its ability to deliver and or facilitate justice in a developing country.
Travel Insurance
Students will be insured by ANU Insurance for the official duration of the program as well as a total of 12 days private travel, either side of the program. For example, 7 days before and 5 days after. If your travel duration extends beyond this period, you will need to purchase additional insurance at your own expense. Chubb offers additional insurance coverage via Chubb Travel Insurance.
To be covered by ANU Insurance, you will need to complete an ANU Travel Approval Form. Please ensure that the start and finish dates do not exceed ANU insurance cover period as set out above. Further information about insurance will be provided to successful students as part of their pre-departure briefing.
Application Dates and How to apply
Applicants must confirm that they are available to travel during the trip dates above. No exceptions will be made if applicants have other commitments.
Applicants must a current passport with an expiration date no less than six months after the start date of the course and must be able to apply for a Cambodian business visa.
