Prisca Ochan is a Bachelor of Laws (Hons)/Political Science student at ANU who has been nationally recognised for her academic, professional and community achievements as a top 10 finalist in the 2019 Lawyers' Weekly Women in Law Awards (Law Student of the Year).

Why did you choose ANU?

It is one of the best universities in Australia (and indeed, the world) and I wanted to have a world-class education. I knew that the opportunities that I would have here would be unparalleled.

Why did you choose to study law?

I chose to study law because I want to become a lawyer! What cemented my desire to study law, and of course, has motivated me to continue with this degree, is my passion for social justice and access to justice. I also realise that things such as your skin colour, your English ability, your accent, and your socioeconomic status can affect whether or not you are able to access justice and the quality of legal representation and advice that you receive. I want to be in a position to change that. And finally, I just want to see more people who look like me in the legal profession here in Australia!

What is something you wish you knew as a first-year student?

I wish I knew how important it really is to develop productive working relationships with your tutors and lecturers—go to consultation hours, ask questions, be engaged! 

What are your most memorable experiences at ANU Law?

The most memorable thing about being a law student has been the opportunities I have had to challenge myself and develop personally and professionally, including travelling interstate and overseas to represent my university at various legal competitions. For example, in February 2019 I represented ANU at the international John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition in Singapore.  

What are your next steps, planned or aspired, after graduation? 

I hope to eventually practise law, preferably in litigation and dispute resolution. 
 
What advice would you give future ANU Law students?

My advice to is to get involved in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. Some of you may be sceptical of adding even more to your already burdensome schedule while at law school. Needless to say, adding just a few extracurricular activities can prove to be very valuable to your education and to your future.
