LRSJ group Law Students for Gender Equality is bringing students and staff together to think through past and future paths for legal change. This semester’s evening event, ‘Voices by the Fire: Stories of Gender and Justice’, fostered discussion on gender, justice, and lived experiences of women and gender-diverse people in the legal system.06 May 2025

The ANU Law Students’ Society’s 2024 Ashurst Senior Mooting Competition showcased 38 students' advocacy skills in a contract law dispute, culminating in a Grand Final victory for Luke McNamara, Ashna Sahi, and Francesca Boardman, with McNamara also winning Best Speaker.

In late 2024, Professor James Stellios FAAL FASSA, former Head of the ANU Law School, was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia. On 21 February 2025, he will be welcomed at a Ceremonial Sitting in Sydney.

Research
Dr Susan Bartie is a passionate socio-legal historian at the ANU Law School. She is currently working on a 50-year history of Australian environmental lawyers (both academic and practising). This project builds on her prior studies of the discipline of law and is part of her broader academic agenda: to strengthen the empirical dimensions of law and better integrate them into mainstream legal studies and cognate disciplines.

This month CIPL is delighted to announce the publication of a major new report that we hope will shape policy thinking in Australia and globally. The report is entitled War Funders and Profiteers: Economic Complicity in International Crimes in Ukraine and Beyond and, as the title suggests, it takes on the crucial but under-explored issue of international criminal responsibility of those who fund international crimes – war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and aggression – or profit from them.

Hamza Muhammad did not intend to study law. A small business owner, Hamza realised that the law was a field he often came across in his day-to-day work. “The field of law can be daunting to anyone who lacks its knowledge. It is an important field for any business owner,” said Hamza. Motivated to upskill, he applied for the Master of Laws (LLM) at ANU.

For Professor James C. Hathaway, coming to the ANU College of Law was a long time coming. A leading expert in international law, Professor Hathaway delivered the 2024 Kirby Lecture in International Law at ANU, established to recognise the long passion and service to international law by The Hon Michael Kirby. His groundbreaking work advocates for sexual autonomy rights, highlighting the absence of UN treaties protecting queer individuals' freedoms.
