Professor Michael Kobetsky is an Honorary Professor at the Australian National University College of Law and a Fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute at the Crawford School of Public Policy. He is a Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne Law School.

Professor Kobetsky is an inaugural member of the United Nations Sub-Committee on Transfer Pricing and the United Nations Sub-Committee on Extractive Industries Taxation Issues for Developing Countries. He is a member of the International Fiscal Association.

Professor Kobetsky researches and teaches in transfer pricing, tax treaties, and international anti-avoidance measures. He has published extensively on international taxation in journals in Australia, Canada and Europe. He has presented seminars and conference papers around the world, including in: Austria, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, UK, US, Vietnam and Zambia.

Professor Kobetsky was a Global Professor of Law at New York University Law School (2013–14 & 2019–20). He was a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, Faculty of Law, Centre for Tax Law and Wolfson College, Cambridge (2012) and he was a Visiting Professor at the Western University Law School (Ontario, Canada) (2011–12, 2016–17 & 2018–19).

He has worked as a consultant for the OECD, United Nations, USAID, the World Bank, IMF, GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation which is the German government’s foreign-aid organisation), and AusAID.

Professor Kobetsky has 10 years’ experience as a senior policy officer with the Australian Taxation Office in their policy and legislation group designing and implementing tax law and policies. He also worked as a consultant in the federal social services portfolio designing reform of the assets test to counter abuse through the use of trust structures. He worked for the Library of the Parliament of Australia, providing advice to parliamentary members and senators on taxation proposals and bills being debated in the Parliament.
