University of Tokyo Law School Summer School

ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy and the University of Tokyo Law School have partnered to provide a unique and rare study opportunity in Japan. This program, funded by both the University of Tokyo Institute of Business Law and Comparative Law and Politics (UTokyo Institute of Business Law) and the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy, offers an opportunity for up to three ANU students to participate in a short intensive Summer School in Yugawara, Japan, in early August.

The theme for 2025 is Introduction to U.S. Law.

 

Outline of the Program

The University of Tokyo Law School Summer School has been held every summer since 2004. This all-English summer intensive course is held during the summer vacation, inviting six esteemed scholars and legal practitioners to lecture. On average, around 60 students participate in the course each year. These students come from a variety of backgrounds, including the University of Tokyo Law School and Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, as well as selected law schools in Asia, Europe and Oceania.

The course consists of five days of multiple sessions and a final 180 minute exam on the morning of the 6th day. Upon successful completion of the course, students can apply to receive 6 units of unspecified law elective credit.

 

Costs and Travel Insurance

The UTokyo Institute of Business will cover the following costs:

  • The Summer School tuition fees
  • Meals for the duration of the program (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
  • Accommodation for the duration of the program (For the nights of 31 July - 8 August 2025)
  • Transportation between the hotel and the Human Resources Development Center, MITSUI & CO., LTD.

Participants will need to cover the following costs:

  • Airfare to and from Japan
  • Transportation and meals not covered by the University of Tokyo

Participants may extend their stay in Japan before 31 July and/or after 8 August at their own expense, including making their own accommodation arrangements.

ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy will provide successful participants with a travel grant of $1,000 AUD to assist with travel costs. ANU will also provide travel insurance for the duration of this opportunity.

Please note that no additional funding can be provided to students through other Scholarships, Bursaries, or Funds offered by ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy, and selected students are expected to cover any other costs associated with this opportunity.

 

Documents required for your application

In your application, you will need to supply:

  • General information
  • GPA
  • A short statement on your interest, involvement, any relevant courses, experiences and future career goals in Asia-focused law studies.

 

Eligibility

The program is available to a current ANU student who:

  • Is a domestic or permanent resident ; and
  • Is enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) either as a single or flexible double degree at the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy; or
  • Is enrolled in a Juris Doctor at the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy; and
  • Has completed a minimum of 90 units of their Law degree at the time of applying; and
  • Has completed LAWS2250 / LAWS6250 International Law at the time of applying; and
  • Is able to travel overseas for the duration of the program*.

*Please make sure that you have a current valid passport and eligible to travel overseas before applying for this opportunity.

Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate a proficiency in Japanese.

Selection process

The ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy will nominate up to three candidates for the program. The ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy or the UTokyo Institute of Business Law reserves the right not to select any candidates in a given year. Final outcomes will be announced approximately one week after the application closing date.

 

Schedule

Thursday 31 July: Arrival in Japan. Check-in available after 3:00pm.

Friday 1 August:

  • Attend an introductory lecture on Japanese law for international participants, delivered by Professor Carol Lawson of the University of Tokyo. Location: Law School Building, Hongo Campus (Morning)
  • TBC (Afternoon)

Saturday 2 August - Wednesday 6 August: Start of the Summer School. Location: Human Resources Development Center, MITSUI CO at Yugawara

Thursday 7 August: Summer School exam and return to Tokyo

Friday 8 August: Free day

Saturday 9 August: Departure. Check-out by 11:00 am.

Please note that the Summer School may be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.

 

Travel and Dress Code

Travel

Successful applicants will be expected to arrive in Tokyo, Japan no later than 31 July 2025.

Travel during the Summer School will be organised by the UTokyo Institute of Business Law:

  • 31 July - 2 August (2 nights) in Tokyo
  • 2 August - 7 August (6 nights) in Atami
  • 7 August - 9 August (2 nights) in Tokyo

The accommodations are to be used only by the participants. This is by rule of the venue and the Japanese Hotel Business Act.

Selected students will need to organise their own airfares, and transport to and from the airport.

 

Dress Code

The dress code for the program is casual, except on 1 August, when business formal attire may be required for a scheduled visit.
