University of Tokyo Law School Summer School

ANU College of Law and the University of Tokyo Law School have partnered to provide a unique and rare study opportunity in Japan. This program, funded by both the University of Tokyo Institute of Business Law and Comparative Law and Politics (UTokyo Institute of Business Law) and the ANU College of Law, offers an opportunity for up to three ANU students to participate in a short intensive Summer School in Yugawara, Japan, in early August. The theme for 2024 is Global Trends in Competition Law and Policy.

Outline

The University of Tokyo Law School Summer School has been held every summer since 2004. This all-English summer intensive course is held during the summer vacation, inviting six esteemed scholars and legal practitioners to lecture. On average, around 60 students participate in the course each year. These students come from a variety of backgrounds, including the University of Tokyo Law School and Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, as well as selected law schools in Asia, Europe and Oceania.

The course consists of five days of multiple sessions and a final 180 minute exam on the morning of the 6th day. Upon successful completion of the course, students can apply to receive 6 units of unspecified law elective credit.

August 1 (Thu): Arrival in Japan

August 2 (Fri)

  • Introductory lecture on Japanese law for overseas participants, given by Assoc. Prof. Carol Lawson of the University of Tokyo (Morning)
  • Visiting Japanese Supreme Court (Afternoon)

August 3 (Sat): Start of the Summer School at the Human Resources Development Center, MITSUI & CO at Yugawara

August 8 (Thu): Summer School Exam and return to Tokyo.

August 10 (Sat) : Depart Japan

 

Fees 

The Summer School fees, including food, accommodation, and teaching materials, will be paid by the UTokyo Institute of Business. Additionally, students will receive a travel grant of $1000 AUD from ANU College of Law, to assist with travel costs. ANU will also provide travel insurance for the duration of this opportunity.

Please note that no additional funding can be provided to students through other Scholarships, Bursaries, or Funds offered by ANU College of Law, and selected students are expected to cover other costs associated with this opportunity.

 

Travel

Successful applicants will be expected to arrive in Tokyo, Japan no later than 1 August 2024. 

Travel during the Summer School will be organised by the UTokyo Institute of Business Law. However, please note that the selected students will need to organise their own airfares, and transport to and from the airport. 

 

Eligibility 

The program is available to a current ANU student who:

  • Is a  domestic  or permanent resident ; and
  • Is enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) either as a single or flexible double degree at the ANU College of Law; or
  • Is enrolled in a Juris Doctor at the ANU College of Law; and
  • Has completed a minimum of 90 units of their Law degree at the time of applying; and
  • Has completed LAWS2250 / LAWS6250 International Law at the time of applying; and
  • Is able to travel overseas for the duration of the program*.

*Please make sure that you have a current valid passport and eligible to travel overseas before applying for this opportunity.

Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate a proficiency in Japanese. 

 

Timeline

  • Applications Open: Friday 3 May
  • Applications Close: Sunday 12 May at 11:45pm
  • Expected decision (Outcome)*: mid/end of June

*The ANU College of Law will select the top candidates to forward to the UTokyo Institute of Business Law, from which they will choose a maximum of three students for the program. The final selection rests with the University of Tokyo. The UTokyo Institute of Business Law reserves the right not to select any student in any given year. The final outcome from the UTokyo Institute of Business Law is expected towards the end of June.
