Why did you choose ANU, and why did you choose to study law?
I was motivated to study law in ANU because it is renowned for its teaching quality; distinguished guest speakers and retired judges are often invited to speak at lectures, and I wanted to expand my world-view through these experiences. I hope to be able to use my degree in a career that involves working with vulnerable people. My clinical internship at the Canberra Community Law Centre has really shaped my empathy and career path, and I hope to be able to put my excellent education to good use.
What is something you wish you knew as a first-year student?
When I received my offer to study law at ANU, I was thrilled but also anxious. As an international student from Malaysia, I was excited to start a new life at the best university in Australia yet also nervous about being immersed in a new country, culture and environment without family. Thankfully, the transition to Canberra was smooth as there were many seniors from the different clubs and a first-year law mentor who was assigned to me, who answered all my questions with great patience. Canberra is a beautiful city—perfect for those who enjoy peace and quiet without the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a multitude of activities and places to go if you know where to look!
