Established in 2002, the Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot is recognised as Australia’s premier constitutional law mooting competition for law students. The Moot brings together the nation's best and brightest mooters to present oral and written submissions on a case, which is based on current (and sometimes controversial) issues in Australian constitutional law, before some of the nation’s most eminent legal minds. Previous moot problem questions have been drafted by Justices of the High Court and Solicitors-General. For several years, the grand final has been presided over by current or former Justices of the High Court.

In 2025, the competition will be conducted in-person at the Australian National University, and run from Saturday 4 October to Tuesday 7 October 2025..

Don't miss out on this opportunity to participate and receive credit for your work through enrolment in LAWS4011/ LAWS6011 Law, Mooting and Advocacy. Please note that students may enrol in Law, Mooting and Advocacy more than once if they are participating in different mooting competitions, such as the Australia-Japan Student Policy Summit, the Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot Competition, or the Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot Competition.

More information on the the Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot can be found on the ANU LSS website, and the Australian Association of Constitutional Law (‘AACL’) website.

Assessment Criteria for Applicants

Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Familiarity with International Law: A foundational understanding of key principles and concepts in constitutional law.
  • Experience in Research and Mooting: While not mandatory, prior involvement in research and mooting is preferred.
  • Academic Performance: Consideration will be given to academic achievements and overall performance.
  • Team Collaboration Skills: The ability to work effectively within a team setting.
