Professor Donald Rothwell has been appointed a Life Member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law (ANZSIL). He is only the fifth person to receive the honour since the Society was founded in 1992.
“Being recognised with ANZSIL Life Membership is a career highlight. Having this status bestowed upon me by Australian and New Zealand international lawyers from across academia and legal practice is a great honour, especially as previous recipients have been giants in the field,” Professor Rothwell says.
Professor Rothwell was President of ANZSIL from 2001 to 2005, where he led a range of new initiatives including building connections with other societies of international law globally, and initiating the ANZSIL Postgraduate Research Students Workshop.
“ANZSIL had its humble beginnings in annual conferences held at ANU and as President I was pleased to be able to promote the society through what became rotational meetings in at ANU, and Wellington at Victoria University. It has been a great pleasure to see the growth in ANZSIL membership and debate and discourse about topical international law issues over 30 years,” he adds.
Current President of ANZSIL, Professor Alison Duxbury says “Life membership in the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law (ANZSIL) is designed to recognise individuals who have provided outstanding service to ANZSIL and demonstrated exceptional commitment to pursuing the Society's objects over time. In Professor Rothwell’s case, it recognises his central role in the origins and subsequent success of the Society.”
“He has remained closely engaged with ANZSIL’s work, presenting his research to the annual conference, and supporting the Society’s activities in many other ways, including through participation in events organised by ANZSIL Interest Groups,” she adds, “Professor Rothwell has also been an important mentor for ANZSIL office holders as well as academic colleagues in the field more generally.”
The four other lifetime members are Judge Hilary Charlesworth, Judge Sir Kenneth Keith (dec.), Professor (Hon) Bill Campbell KC and Professor Ivan Shearer AM RFD (dec.).
