Get to know one of our new Student Ambassadors, Chloe Law (Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Music).
Why did you choose to study law at ANU?
I chose to study law at ANU largely due to the University’s extensive range of double degree offerings, unlike that of most other institutions in Australia. ANU College of Law’s world-class reputation as a leading law school was also a notable feature. Further, I was drawn by the University’s beautiful campus, particularly its vast greenery, which evokes a sense of serenity. I was also excited to explore law-related opportunities through studying in Canberra, due to its close proximity to various government institutions, organisations, and legal entities.
Describe a highlight of your degree so far.
The highlight of my degree so far has been meeting fellow students from all over the world who, like me, have chosen to relocate to Canberra to pursue their dreams. The undergraduate law cohort in particular is filled with students with such diverse interests and passions, due to the large number of students pursuing double degrees. It is so valuable to talk to others who have a shared interest in law, but also bring so much knowledge and passion in another area of study. I think that having a cohort where every individual brings such a great variety of perspectives and skill sets is something truly unique to the culture at the ANU College of Law.
Have there been any challenging moments?
I am unable to single out a specific challenging moment, but I have certainly experience moments of imposter syndrome in my law studies. I have learnt that feelings of self-doubt are a fairly common experience, particularly amongst the law student cohort. I still find it easy to compare myself to those around me, especially when it feels like everyone else has figured everything out already. However, I am slowly learning that focusing on my own goals and learning journey is much more productive than spiralling down the rabbit hole of feeling inadequate. As valuable as it is to constantly strive for self-improvement, I am learning that it is equally important to celebrate personal wins, and take moments to rest when I need it.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of law school?
Outside of law school, my biggest passion is definitely music, so it is fortunate that the other degree I am studying is a Bachelor of Music, majoring in cello performance. I particularly enjoy playing with others in various chamber groups and ANU Orchestra, and I teach cello and piano to young students and adults. I also enjoy dabbling in various arts and crafts; with a keen interest in calligraphy and hand-lettering, I like to journal, scrapbook, and make cards. I also enjoy crocheting, particularly to create amigurumi toys.
What advice do you have for prospective law students?
I would advise prospective law students to not be too intimidated by the stereotypes that surround law school, particularly regarding its intense culture. I believe that likewise to any other degree, if you are truly passionate about studying law, the workload should be both manageable and enjoyable. Personally, I find it important to maintain a balance between my studies, alongside other activities such as part-time work and socialising. I have found this to be effective in preventing burnout, as well as allowing me to continue to develop skills in organisation, communication, and time management. I would also advise students to make the most of the opportunities that are offered at ANU, whether it is something law-related like mooting, or clubs, societies and leadership roles completely unrelated to your studies; the possibilities are endless!
