From interstate to inside Australia’s institutions with ANU Law
Ben Huntsman

Leaving home to study law is a big decision, but for Ben Huntsman (Bachelor of Law (Honours) ‘25), it opened the door to opportunities he could not have found anywhere else. By moving interstate to Canberra to study at ANU Law School, Ben placed himself at the centre of Australia’s legal and governmental institutions, gaining hands-on experience, academic depth, and a new perspective on where a law degree can take you.

Here Ben’s insights on how ANU Law School changed his perspective in his own words:

Why did you choose to study law at ANU?

Like many others, I was drawn to the opportunity to study close to our institutions of government. I also knew that moving interstate would take me out of my comfort zone and push me to grow as a person.

What has been the highlight of your ANU Law School experience?

There have been many highlights. One particular highlight is being awarded the Leslie Zines Constitutional Law Travel Grant, which afforded me the opportunity of ten weeks learning  at the Attorney-General’s Department and the Australian Government Solicitor. The most important part of any university experience though is the people, and so I’m very grateful for all the friendships I’ve made here and the collegiate atmosphere on campus.

Were there any subjects, projects, or experiences that shaped your ANU Law experience or career aspirations?

My undergraduate law dissertation dominated my final year and was by far the most intellectually enriching experience I had over the course of my degree. I learnt a huge amount – not only about my chosen topic, but also in terms of my writing skills. I’m particularly grateful to my supervisor, Professor Ron Levy, for his patient supervision and generosity with his time. Special thanks also to Associate Professor Joshua Neoh for a tremendous course on Malaysian constitutional law that made my final semester great fun.

What are your plans after graduation?

I’m headed back to Melbourne to start a graduate role at a large commercial law firm.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying law at ANU?

Keep an open mind! I think my intended career path changed about three times over the course of my time at university, so I encourage everyone to make the most of the incredible breadth that the Law School has to offer. As past graduates have proven, your studies here can take you to any job in the legal profession.

If you could sum up your ANU Law experience in three words, what would they be?

Many new perspectives.

Congratulations, Ben. We hope the best for the next chapter of your legal career.
