Likim Ng is a PhD candidate at ANU College of Law.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself including what brought you to ANU.

Writing my PhD thesis on the exclusion of refugees through the law under the supervision of Associate Professor Dorota Gozdecka brought me to ANU

2. What do you enjoy most about the ANU College of Law?

The opportunity to learn from academics who are truly masters of their craft and take their duty to train the next generation of scholars seriously. My colleagues at the Centre for Law, Arts and Humanities have encouraged me to think about different ways to understand the law and justice.

3. What is your favourite spot on campus?

The courtyard of Fellows bar to catch up with the PhD cohort

4. How do you relax away from university?

A morning or lunchtime surf. Paddling against the current and the cold water forces me to be present.

5. How would you describe Canberra in three words?

Relaxing, leafy, friendly

6. What inspired you to pursue law?

I wanted to inspire equality before the law; no matter where you come from, your gender or your ethnicity

7. What was your dream job as a child?

A concert pianist. I wanted to study a diploma in piano but my fingers ended up being too short.

8. If you could meet one historical figure, who would it be?

Mahatma Gandhi

9. Who’s your favourite fictional character?

Little My, a character from the Finnish Swedish children's Moomin series by Tove Jansson

10. What’s a project or hobby you’re currently working on that motivates you?

I've been taking pottery classes. There's something about kneading the clay, the messiness and mixing glazes that is so joyful.

11. What’s your favourite quote?

'I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.' Maya Angelou.

12. What’s the secret to studying and working from home successfully?

Start the day with some heart warming music, a walk in nature and a cosy herbal tea

13. Who is someone you look up to?

My mother

14. What was the last book you read?

Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe.

15. What’s an underrated movie?

Always Be My Maybe (2019), a romantic comedy starring Ali Wong. There are a lot of diverse actors that play lead roles in Netflix movies, which I think is in itself underrated!

16. What’s your favourite dish?

Vietnamese Pho beef noodle soup from AN Restaurant in Bankstown

17. What’s your favourite place in Canberra to visit?

The National Gallery

18. What’s your favourite song or playlist to work to?

Mul Mantra by Snantam Kaur is beautiful and uplifting

19. What’s a skill you’d like to learn?

Bee keeping. My sister-in-law has a hive in her garden and makes unprocessed raw honey.

20. What advice would you give to others feeling uneasy during this time?

Treat yourself like you are your own best friend. Take time for self care. I like to light some candles or incense and listen to relaxing music.
