Jeremy Farrall is an Associate Professor at ANU College of Law.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself including what brought you to ANU.
I came to ANU in 2006 to work with Hilary Charlesworth on her ARC Federation Fellowship Project ‘Building Democracy and Justice after Conflict’. It was a great opportunity to work with an inspirational scholar and to reflect on the academic implications of the work I’d been doing in and on post-conflict situations for the United Nations.
2. What do you enjoy most about working at the ANU College of Law?
Spontaneous corridor conversations when you learn unexpected things about colleagues
3. What is your favourite spot on campus?
A tranquil coffee spot that I refuse to disclose as I want it to remain, well, tranquil
4. How do you relax away from university?
Throwing the frisbee with my daughters and running on Black Mountain fire-trails
5. How would you describe Canberra in three words?
Space to grow
6. What inspired you to go to pursue academia/your professional field?
My parents and grandparents
7. What was your dream job as a child?
At 3 I wanted to be a pilot, at 10 an astronaut and at 15 a diplomat
8. If you could meet one historical figure, who would it be?
Martin Luther King, Jr
9. Who’s your favourite fictional character?
I’m currently enjoying the surly, irreverent company of D.I. Franz Heineken (aka ‘Pufferfish’) of Tasmania Police
10. What’s a project or hobby you’re currently working on that motivates you?
Parenting

It’s easier to seek forgiveness than permission
12. What’s the secret to working from home successfully?
Regular breaks
13. Who is someone you look up to?
In these times, even more than usual, nurses, doctors, paramedics, teachers, aged-care workers, people who can build things with their hands.

Bruny by Heather Rose
15. What’s an under-rated movie?
Serious drama: Burnt by the Sun (1994)
Comedy: Daddy’s Home (2015). It’s as bad as it sounds, but never fails to make me giggle. One day I’ll trial a dance-off in my dispute resolution simulations.
16. What’s your favourite dish?
Lyn’s Goi Cuon with secret family recipe for spicy peanut dipping sauce
17. What’s your favourite place in Canberra to visit?
James Turrell’s Skyspace at National Gallery of Australia – best experienced at dawn or dusk with just you and your loved one(s).
18. What’s your favourite song or playlist to work to?
Just about anything by Angus and Julia Stone
19. What’s a skill you’d like to learn?
To dance like my kids
20. What advice would you give to others feeling uneasy during this time?
Be gentle on yourself and kind to others. Don’t write angry emails. Join Associate Professor Anthony Hopkin’s meditation sessions.
