ANU Law School student Alison Cook has been named a finalist for Law Student of the Year at the Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards

“I am thrilled to have been selected as a finalist for the Australian Law Student of the Year. It makes me incredibly proud to be able to represent ANU Law School and the wider ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy,” she says.

Alison is the co-founder and National Director of the Women’s Advocacy Mentoring Group, which was founded at the ANU Law School in 2025. She has organised a number of initiatives at ANU, including the Clerkship Sprint Series, which she founded with two friends which supports ANU Law School students navigating applications, interviews and recruitment processes for commercial firms. She also oversaw the increase in support for mooting competitions as Director of External Competitions for the ANU Law Students’ Society.

In addition to this, she is the co-founder and National Director of the Women’s Advocacy Mentoring Group (WAMG), a student-led initiative established at ANU to support and encourage female and gender-diverse law students to pursue advocacy. WAMG focuses on building confidence, advocacy skills and professional networks through mentoring, workshops and guest speaker events. In March, the organisation expanded nationally, with chapters being launched at the University of Wollongong and planned expansion to the Australian Catholic University and the University of Canberra.

“I am so grateful for the immense support over the years — especially that of Associate Professor Dr Heather Roberts, who goes above and beyond to better the student experience. Dr Roberts’ Visiting Judges Program, in particular, has been instrumental in supporting my work with the Women’s Advocacy Mentoring Group, a highlight of my law degree, and one of the reasons why I consider myself lucky to have been able to study at ANU Law School,” she added.

We wish Alison all the best, with winners announced on 30 July 2026.
