Event description

Hosted by Dr Pip Ryan, this event will explore the nature of truth and the role it plays in different contexts.

Truth has a special role to play in law, journalism and science. With our panel of experts, this discussion will examine truth and proof in the courtroom, truth and fact-finding in journalism, and the use of oracles in algorithms. Dr Ryan's research into the nature of trust and distrust will provide a counterpoint for discussion of the role of truth, misinformation and fake news in social and political discourse. Does anyone trust the truth anymore?

On our panel:

  • The Hon Justice Monika Schmidt AM, retired judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales
  • Jonathan Harley, Head of Media Strategy and Development at Canva
  • Dr Mark Staples, Senior Principal Researcher at CSIRO’s Data61

There will be a follow-up Menzies Cyber Masters Q&A session on Thursday 5 August. This invitation-only discussion will provide an opportunity for a deep-dive into some audience questions posed on the night or afterwards.

Jonathan brought to this role over 25 years' experience in news and current affairs with the ABC and Channel Nine's 60 Minutes. During his years as a foreign correspondent, Jonathan established a reputation as one of a handful of foreign journalists regularly visiting and covering Taliban Afghanistan. He earned unrivalled access to areas of the country and key leaders to offer a unique window on the hermit state. On September 11, 2001, he was the only Australian journalist to be in Kabul. As the ABC's Bureau Chief for South Asia, Jonathan drove its digital and physical transformation from an outdated, run-down analogue set-up to an adaptable digital footprint.
