Are you considering applying for a position as a Judge’s Associate or Tipstaff after graduation? Join us as we speak to alumni who currently have or recently completed an Associateship about their experiences and advice on applying for one.

Maddi Winterbottom
Maddi Winterbottom, Associate to ​Her Honour Judge Catherine Traill

Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Psychology ‘16

Maddi Winterbottom completed degrees in Law and Psychology at ANU before starting as a graduate at Herbert Smith Freehills. She recently took a year off corporate law to complete an Associateship at the Sydney District Court with Her Honour Judge Traill, in order have some exposure to criminal law and the court process.

Kate Martin
Kate Martin, Associate to Justice David Mossop

Kate Martin commenced work as an Associate to Justice Mossop at the ACT Supreme Court in June 2019. Criminal matters comprise the major part of the court’s work and Kate has enjoyed gaining first-hand experience of the criminal trial process. The ACT Supreme Court also sits as the Court of Appeal, providing her with the opportunity to see high quality advocacy on a range of interesting issues. Prior to being an Associate she worked as a Legal Assistant to a Sydney barrister specialising in native title law. Whilst a student at the ANU she was a member of the ANU Jessup Moot team, a student editor for the Federal Law Review and a Peer Assisted Learning mentor. Next year she will join a corporate law firm in Canberra. 

Alexander Proudford
Alexander Proudford, Associate to The Hon Justice Jayne Jagot

BIR/LLB (Hons) ‘17

After graduation, Alexander Proudford worked as a solicitor in the insurance litigation team of Norton Rose Fulbright Australia. In 2020, Alexander joined the Federal Court of Australia as the Associate to the Honourable Justice J M Jagot. Alexander is currently studying his Master of Laws at the University of Sydney.

Naomi Wootten
Naomi Wootton, Barrister at Fifth Floor St James’ Hall

BA/LLM(Hons) ‘16

Naomi Wootton is a barrister at the New South Wales (NSW) Bar. She has worked at the NSW Supreme Court as Tipstaff to the Chief Justice (2017) and Research Director to the Chief Justice (2018). In 2019, she was Associate to The Hon Justice Virginia Bell AC at the High Court of Australia.

Jessica Elliott
Jessica Elliott, Research Director to the Chief Justice of New South Wales

BA/LLB(Hons) ‘18

Whilst at ANU, Jessica Elliott was the legal clerk at Henry Parkes Chambers, an editor of the Federal Law Review and Australian Yearbook of International Law and a summer clerk at King & Wood Mallesons. In 2019, Jessica worked as the Tipstaff to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. She is currently the Research Director to the Chief Justice.
