Mooting is the oldest form of legal training for law advocates. The Kirby Moot demonstrates Victoria University’s strong industry connections. It is a fixture in the legal calendar and has strong support from the County Court of Victoria, members of the Victorian Bar, various law firms and practical legal training institutions. Law professionals are invited to judge the rounds and provide feedback to students.
In 2025, the competition will be conducted in-person at Victoria Law School, with the Grand Final appearing at the Federal Court of Australia.
The 13th Annual Kirby Contract Law Moot will run from Monday 22 September to Thursday 25 September 2025.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to participate and receive credit for your work through enrolment in LAWS4011/ LAWS6011 Law, Mooting and Advocacy. Please note that students may enrol in Law, Mooting and Advocacy more than once if they are participating in different mooting competitions, such as the Australia-Japan Student Policy Summit, the Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot Competition, or the Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot Competition.
More information on the Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot can be found on the Vitoria University's website.
Assessment Criteria for Applicants
Applicants will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Familiarity with International Law: A foundational understanding of key principles and concepts in contract law.
- Experience in Research and Mooting: While not mandatory, prior involvement in research and mooting is preferred.
- Academic Performance: Consideration will be given to academic achievements and overall performance.
- Team Collaboration Skills: The ability to work effectively within a team setting.
It is advantageous for at least one team member to have strong IT and editing skills, especially in Microsoft Word, to support the challenging task of creating memorials.
It is important to note that team members must not have completed their LLB or JD by the time the competition takes place.
As the Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot is a course offered by the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy, equity considerations and access to learning opportunities will be essential factors for the Course Convener during the team selection process.
Documents required for your application
In your application, you will need to supply a marked copy of your best piece of legal problem analysis
We also recommend students to submit a letter of support from a Law academic (not compulsory). Shortlisted candidates may be invited to interview.
Expenses and Financial assistance
Financial support is available from the ANU Law School to mitigate the costs of participation (registration, travel and accommodation). The sum is usually sufficient to offset the majority of expenses incurred by students participating in this competition. Participating students may claim reimbursement as agreed with the Convener of LAWS4011 Law, Mooting & Advocacy.
Any trip expenses exceeding the travel grant must be covered by the applicant.
