Legal practice experience (LPE)

An essential component of your GDLP is the Legal Practice Experience (LPE) which is a placement in the legal profession under the supervision of a lawyer with at least three years of legal experience. The practical experience comprises a 20, 50 or 80 day placement in an approved legal workplace.

We now also offer to our students the option of a 15 day LPE placement in conjunction with the submission of an end of placement report.

Full details of the requirements for the 15 day placement + placement report can be found in the LPE Guidelines & LPE Application Form, linked below.

Please refer to the LPE Guidelines for more information and the LPE Application form to make an application.

Please note: you can only enrol in this course once you have completed all your placement days. You will receive enrolment instructions (and a permission code) from the LPE Convenor.

Remote Supervision during COVID-19

To apply for approval for remote supervision of your student placement for LPE during the COVID-19 social distancing measures, please refer to the LPE Guidelines for Remote Supervision for more information, the LPE Remote Supervision Application Form to make an application and the LPE Remote Supervision Diary for completing your placement documentation.

Regional, Rural, Remote (RRR)

Due to a shortage of lawyers in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia, we strongly encourage GDLP students to undertake the legal placement experience component of the GDLP in RRR areas.

The ANU School of Legal Practice is the first and only Practical Legal Training program in Australia contributing towards addressing the significant need for lawyers in RRR locations by offering financial assistance to help offset the costs of out of pocket expenses such as travel and accommodation in support of students undertaking RRR legal practice experience.

To arrange a RRR legal placement, you will at first instance, enquire directly with legal organisations or practices, in RRR locations, to arrange and confirm a legal placement following which you will complete and submit the RRR Financial Assistance Form to the School of Legal Practice along with any required supporting documents.

Legal Aid Clinic (LAC)

GDLP and MLP students in Canberra are invited to participate in the Legal Aid Clinic in Semester 1, 2021 to obtain Legal Practice Experience (LPE).

The Legal Aid Clinic is a legal clinic run by the ANU School of Legal Practice at Legal Aid ACT.

Students interested in the program should refer to the Legal Aid Clinic Flyer and the Legal Aid Clinic Program Booklet for more information.
