Early in his life, Stephen had thought of becoming a lawyer. It was whilst studying at ANU that an interest turned into a passion for law, enabling a path that took him from a small rural town, to big city barrister, and to the pinnacle of Australia's legal system.

• Served as Solicitor-General of Australia.
• Appointed a Senior Counsel (SC) in 2000.
• Practised as a barrister for 20 years, specialising in constitutional, administrative and commercial law.
• Served as an Associate to High Court Justice Sir Anthony Mason.
