Wayne Morgan undertakes interdisciplinary research focused on social justice and law reform, primarily in the areas of human sexuality, gender identity and legal regulation. Wayne is recognised internationally as a pioneer in the field of queer legal theory.
His research and publications cover areas such as the legal regulation of sexual behaviour through the criminal law and other mechanisms, the legal regulation of pornography and sex work, recognition of the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community in the areas of anti-discrimination law, relationship recognition, family law and international human rights law.
Wayne actively pursues his research through practical law reform activities. Wayne’s research has contributed to a number of test cases before tribunals and courts at the national and international level, including cases before the Australian High Court and the UN Human Rights Committee. This research has influenced the outcome in cases involving decriminalisation of sodomy, HIV regulation and discrimination and sex work.
His research has also contributed to ground-breaking legislative reform, such as the Tasmanian Relationships Act (2003), and reforms to Commonwealth family law in 2008. Wayne has also contributed as a commentator to the Australian Feminist Judgments Project and other re-writing Judgement projects.
Wayne teaches in the areas of Property Law, International Law, and Law, Gender Identities and Sexualities.
