Below are the student expectations and requirements for a law clinic. For more details on available clinics and practicum courses, application dates, and the application form, please visit our Clinical Courses webpage, or our Practicum Courses webpage.
1.Students must attend in-person the orientation session/s, all seminars, rostered clinic days and/or clinic/practicum sessions.
2. All students are required to attend an orientation session to ensure appropriate onboarding prior to participation in the Clinical Program. The orientation session will be scheduled in Week One and in-person attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend will result in loss of placement.
3. Failure to have 100% in-person attendance for all seminars, rostered clinic days and/or clinic/practicum sessions will result in a NCN (fail) mark for the course.
3.1 Only exceptional circumstances beyond a student’s control can warrant an exception to rule 3.
3.2 An application to justify less than 100% attendance must be made in writing directly to the convener, prior to the relevant seminar/clinic day or session. Students must supply appropriate supporting documentation with their application.
3.3 Exceptional circumstances that warrant approval to be absent include, but are not limited to:
3.3.1 Medical reasons (student injury, illness or medical condition) of such significance that presence in the seminar/clinic is not possible.
3.3.2 Family/personal reasons (family injury or illness, bereavement) of such significance that presence in the seminar/clinic/practicum is not possible.
3.3.3 Please note that work commitments, travel (overseas or interstate), course clashes, or personal commitments are not considered valid reasons to warrant an absence.
4. Students who accept their offer into a clinical/practicum course must remain enrolled and complete all assessments. Students who no longer wish to undertake a clinical/practicum course must contact enquiries.law@anu.edu.au at least two weeks before the start of the course.
5. Students who withdraw from the clinic or practicum course less than two weeks before the start date, or after the course has commenced, for reasons not covered under rule 3.3, will be ineligible to apply for future clinical or practicum course offers.
6. Students must adhere to the ANU Student Code of Conduct when undertaking the clinical/practicum course. All communication must be respectful and constructive, free from discrimination or harassment.
7. The ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy will not accept any liability for failure of a student to comply with the student’s expectations and clinical course requirements, or failure of the student to comply with all laws, health protocols or directions from government Authorities.
8. Students can only undertake one clinical placement offered by the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy. Students can enrol in a clinical placement and a practicum course.
