ANU Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics student, Alexander Buyck, recently participated in the MomentuM Mentoring and Professional Development Program. The program pairs ANU law students with experienced industry professionals. Our mentors come from different law backgrounds, have various levels of experience and specialise in several different topics. Mentors are either located within or outside of Australia.

The program is designed to support student’s professional development and personal growth by engaging with an experienced, knowledgeable mentor.

Alex shares his mentoring experience.

Why did you choose to apply to the MomentuM Mentoring Program?

I chose to attend the MomentuM Mentoring Program because I thought it was a really good opportunity to meet professionals in a range of legal fields. I wanted to learn a lot about career development and how my choices in law school can impact this. I was also really excited to learn about how I could make the most of my time at law school from someone who had experience within the legal field.

How would you describe your experience in the program?

I have really enjoyed my experience in the program so far. I’ve definitely gained a lot of knowledge about different legal fields, made connections and developed my understanding of how my career may progress. I’ve also found it really valuable to visit law firms in person and meet with partners to grow my understanding of how the legal field works.

What are your takeaways from participating in the program?

My key takeaway is definitely to enjoy the process of law school. Take advantage of all the opportunities on offer and don’t forget to enjoy yourself at the same time. I’ve also understood how important it is to pursue what you are genuinely interested in, so that you can have a fulfilling career that you enjoy. However, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to make any decisions just yet and this is a good time to explore your options and interests.

Would you recommend the program to other ANU law students?

I would highly recommend the program to other ANU law students. I’ve found it to be an incredibly valuable experience, especially as a first year with limited connections to the legal field. Attending the program has enabled me to make the most of these connections as well as find out the best ways to move forward with my degree.
