Event description

To celebrate Coming Out Day and in collaboration with the ANU LGBTIQA* Alumni Network, we invite you to join us for a panel discussion where we speak to members of the ANU College of Law LGBTIQA* community about their experiences as students to leading change where they work now.

Our panellists will talk about their motivations, struggles and successes, as well as discuss possible changes needed for future generations to have better opportunities.

On our panel:

  • George Vallance (BAsPacSt, LLB (Hons) ‘13, GDLP ‘14), Executive Branch Manager (a/g), Health Policy and Strategy Branch, ACT Health Directorate;
  • Amy Kilpatrick (LLB (Hons) ’03), Deputy General Counsel, ANU; and
  • Associate Professor Wayne Morgan, Associate Dean (Education), ANU College of Law

Madeleine Castles (BA ’16 and final-year law student) will moderate the discussions.

George Vallance

Since graduating, George has had a diverse career, working in private practice as a solicitor, for a big four consulting firm, for ANU and now for ACT Government. George recently led the LGBTIQ+ Health Scoping Study, which identified barriers to accessing health services for LGBTIQ+ people in the ACT. George's current role includes overseeing a broad spectrum of policy development including: aged and palliative care, women, youth and children, disability, LGBTIQ+ and multicultural communities, primary care and chronic conditions. George was married in 2018 and lives in Ainslie with their wife, two dogs and is looking forward to becoming a parent in October.

Wayne is recognised internationally as a pioneer in the field of queer legal theory. His research and publications cover areas such as the legal regulation of sexual behaviour through the criminal law and other mechanisms, the legal regulation of pornography and sex work, recognition of the rights of the LGBTIQA* community in the areas of anti-discrimination law, relationship recognition, family law and international human rights law.

Her research on sexual harassment litigation has been published in the Federal Law Review. In 2020 she instigated the inaugural ANU Gender and Sexuality Law Moot, which is being run again in 2021.
