About the judge

The Hon Justice Mark Livesey was appointed to the Supreme Court and to the new Court of Appeal of South Australia on 28 January 2020.

He has sat in the Court of Appeal since it commenced sittings on 1 January 2021.

On 1 September 2021, he was appointed President of the Court of Appeal.

After working in commercial and insurance litigation, Justice Livesey joined the Bar in July 2000. He was appointed one of Her Majesty’s Counsel in February 2006.

He had a broad practice in commercial and civil litigation, as well as appeals. He appeared in various arbitrations, including the arbitrations and mediations concerning disputes over the construction and operation of the $2.4 billion new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Justice Livesey served as President of the South Australian Bar Association in 2011-2012 and President of the Australian Bar Association in 2014-2015. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is currently the Vice Chair of the Judges Forum of the International Bar Association.
