The book launch will include an Acknowledgement to Country, a guest speaker and a brief introduction by the author Dr Liz Curran, Research Impact Lead for Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University, Quality, Improvement and Impact Lead at Social Security Rights Victoria and ANU Honorary Associate Professor. Dean of ANU College of Law Professor Sally Wheeler OBE will faciliate this session.
How as a society can we find ways of ensuring the people who are the most vulnerable or have little voice can avail themselves of the protection in law to improve their social, cultural, health and economic outcomes as befits civilised society? Better Law for a Better World answers this question by looking at research, innovative practices and developments emerging within law practice and education and shares the skills and techniques that could lead to confidence in the law and its ability to respond.
Using recent research from Australia, practice initiatives and information, the book breaks down ways for law students, legal educators and law practitioners (including judicial officers, law administrators, legislators and policy makers) to enhance access to justice and improve outcomes through new approaches to lawyering. It is a book relevant not just to the legal profession but decision-makers, multiple professional disciplines (health and social) and the general public as it addresses issues of democracy, citizenship and the rule of law.

Dr Liz Curran is the Principal of Curran Consulting: Enhancing Justice & Human Rights, Research Impact Lead for Nottingham Law School, Notthingham Trent University and Quality, Improvement Impact Lead at Social Security Rights Victoria. She is an Honorary Associate Professor at ANU College of Law.
Liz researches and evaluates services looking at impact evaluation and shaping improved service delivery. She has numerous publications and international peer reviewed articles. She has run a human rights NGO, was team leader in a large humanitarian agency in its advocacy branch and works in policy as well as legal practice. She routinely provides professional development to legal practitioners. Liz has been a Senior Solicitor at the Consumer Action Law Centre (CALC) since June 2012 and since 2017 has been its voluntary in-house adviser. She has been a clinical legal educator, solicitor and director of a community legal service, all based in a community health centre for ten years.
Liz’s research is on access to justice, ethics, clinical and legal education and she undertakes and advises on evaluations centring on effective legal practice including restorative justice and multi-disciplinary practice. Liz is a regular media commentator on access to justice and domestic human rights issues and was ‘expert adviser’ on the Law Council of Australia’s Justice Project.
She is a recipient of the Australian Centenary Medal for ‘legal services to community and lecturing’.
