Ever wondered about the impact internships have on law students at ANU, particularly for those committed to pursuing careers in social justice? At this inaugural Social Justice Internships Showcase presented by the ANU Law Reform and Social Justice research and policy group, ANU students will share their experiences, competencies and skills acquired through their internships to current students, alumni and members of the legal profession.
The ANU College of Law Internship Program offers Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Juris Doctor students the opportunity to learn from leaders in the profession, gain experience in the broad spectrum of practice, deepen their awareness of potential career opportunities and carry out a law-based research project in a legal professional workplace for credit towards their degree. The internship project has a strong focus on developing students’ employability in terms of their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. .
This showcase will highlight the experiences of ANU Law students whose recent internships saw them make contributions to combatting human trafficking, advancing gender equality in politics, and promoting human rights among those unjustly detained. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided.
Speakers
Cate gained important insight into the issue and prevalence of human trafficking in Cambodia, with the emerging concern of Online Child Sexual Exploitation (OSCE) during her experience as an intern at The AusCam Freedom Project.
Claire used her internship with ANU LRSJ to further her interest in women, politics, and the law, and interrogate the Australian Parliament as a gendered institution. During her internship she was instrumental in bringing together a high-profile panel of women to discuss ‘Creating a safe parliamentary workplace for women: Next steps for the Jenkins report’ as part of the ANU’s schedule of International Women’s Day events.
Minna has contributed to the TrialWatch program during her internship at the Clooney Foundation of Justice, and her research has involved looking at overseas jurisdictions such as the European Court of Human Rights and Azerbaijan.
Elroy James completed his internship at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service's Wirraway practice, named after Wurundjeri word for 'challenge'. The practice understands the challenges of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and seeks to address them.
