The fourth seminar in the ANU Media Law seminar series will be delivered by Professor Nicole Moreham, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, on the topic of ‘Privacy and Police Investigations’.

Nicole Moreham is Professor of Law at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. She is an international authority on the law of privacy, and is editor of the primary authority on privacy in media law, Tugendhat and Christie: The Law of Privacy and the Media (3rd ed, OUP, 2016). Professor Moreham has published widely on torts of interference with privacy in common law jurisdictions, from both a doctrinal and a theoretical perspective, and has also published empirical research into the effects of ‘grief journalism’ following major national disasters. Most recently, Professor Moreham has written in the Journal of Media Law about how the law of privacy operates in the context of police investigations: in 2019, and in 2020. In this seminar, Professor Moreham will be talking about whether privacy ought to be protected in police investigations, and how the law of privacy and breach of confidence operates in those circumstances.
