Event description

The ANU Law and Philosophy Forum is delighted to announce its fourth meeting in 2021: a work-in-progress seminar with Dr John Tate, on his work on religious freedom, entitled Burqas, Burqinis and Marilyn Manson: Liberalism and Republicanism in the French and American Public Spheres.

Dr John Tate is Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Newcastle, and specialises in political philosophy and the history of political thought. His particular interests include freedom of speech and expression, toleration, and issues relating to individual liberty and its limits within liberal democratic polities. Within his broad interest in the history and practice of liberalism, Dr Tate has special expertise and has published widely on the works of John Locke. In this work-in-progress seminar, Dr Tate will share his current work on the politics and law of religious freedom in France and America.

This session is held over Zoom. Please register to access the Zoom details.

For those wishing to join this Zoom seminar in person at the College of Law, we will meet at Liz Allen Meeting Room, Room 7.4.5 at ANU College of Law, 5 Fellows Road. Please email jelena.gligorijevic@anu.edu.au if you wish to come along to ensure we meet cap requirements.

The ANU Law and Philosophy Forum is an interdisciplinary group focused on issues spanning law and philosophy.

Its core purpose is to promote research, discussion, and exchanges on various topics in law and philosophy, covering aspects of both private law and public law, and issues within both legal and political philosophy.

The Forum hosts guest speakers, holds workshops, and discusses recent scholarship of note in the field. Meetings are open to faculty members and research students from ANU College of Law and the School of Philosophy, and friends and colleagues of both.
