Event description

Are you considering applying for a position as a judge’s associate or tipstaff after graduation? Join us as we speak to alumni who currently have or recently completed an associateship about their experiences and advice on applying for one.

Speakers

Bede Thompson

Bede Thompson (JD '19, MLP '21) grew up on the Gold Coast in Queensland and graduated from a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Queensland in 2015. At ANU he completed his Juris Doctor in 2019 and Master of Legal Practice in 2021. He is currently working as the Associate to the Honourable Justice Helen Bowskill in the Supreme Court of Queensland. Next year he will be joining the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as a graduate.

Jarryd Roberts

Jarryd Roberts (JD '19, GDLP '20) graduated with a Juris Doctor from ANU in 2019. After finishing his degree, he lived in the Northern Territory for a year working as a paralegal at the Australian Laboratory Services (ALS) in Darwin and in Katherine. At the start of 2020, He moved to Perth to work as an Associate to Justice Joseph McGrath in the Supreme Court of Western Australia. He is currently working as an Associate to Justice Justice Andrew Robert Beech in the Court of Appeal of Western Australia.

Hollie Kerwin

Hollie Kerwin (BA LLB (Hons)'10) is the Deputy Managing Lawyer of the Economic & Social Rights Program at Victoria Legal Aid. Prior to her current role, she worked at Human Rights Law Centre as a Senior Lawyer. She has also worked with the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office, as an Associate to Her Honour Justice Susan Kenny in the Federal Court of Australia and as the Research Assistant to the Chief Investigators in the development phase of the Court as Archive Project application.

She graduated from ANU with first-class honours and was awarded the Blackburn Medal for her Honours thesis.

Kate Renehan

Kate Renehan (BIntRel/LLB (Hons) '19) graduated with a Bachelor of International Relations/LLB (Hons I) from ANU in 2019. She was the tipstaff to the Honourable Justice Peter Garling RFD at the Supreme Court of NSW in 2020. She now works for the Aboriginal Legal Service in Dubbo, NSW as a solicitor, and will soon be moving out to practice with the ALS in Broken Hill. She will head to the United States next year to study her LLM at Harvard University in the class of 2022/23.

Rose Estanislao

Rose Estanislao (BLANG LLB (Hons) '19, GDLP ' 21) graduated from the ANU with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Languages in 2019. From November 2019 to June 2021, she was Associate to Chief Justice Murrell of the ACT Supreme Court and she now works as a lawyer at the Australian Government Solicitor, practicing mainly in civil regulation.
