Why did you choose ANU, and why did you choose to study law?

I have always had a strong interest in social justice and community law work. I was drawn by the variety of opportunities at the ANU College of Law to engage in these activities, allowing me to build towards a career in community law and legal aid. Canberra is the ideal student city, with easy access to bike paths, buses, and (now) the light-rail! Coming from Townsville, I found Canberra an easy city to transition into - it has all the perks of a big city with a small town set-up (and a lot less traffic). My transition was assisted by the fact that I spent the first three years of my degree living with many other regionally-based students at Bruce Hall College, where I became a part of a wonderful community with an incredible support system for all of its students.

What are your most memorable experiences at ANU Law?

My most memorable study experience has been my time in Jakarta, Indonesia. As part of the ANU Law School’s exchange program I had the opportunity to undertake a law course at Atma Jaya University in Jakarta and learn Indonesian law. I also undertook a six-week internship with an Indonesian human rights non-government organisation, where I drafted a research paper on human rights abuses within the Indonesian Prison System using first-hand research undertaken by lawyers at the NGO. I learnt a huge amount about law and human rights in a new legal context and had the opportunity to adventure around Jakarta in my time off - the best way to earn credit for a subject!
