Biography

Clive Williams had a career in Defence intelligence and security to 2002. He was Director of the forerunner organisation to today's Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation and was Director of Security Intelligence. Since leaving Defence he has been based at ANU and has run Masters courses on national security-related issues at ANU and at other Australian and overseas universities. He works part of the year overseas.

This year could see China and Russia with a counterterrorism capability to deploy smart killer drones using facial-recognition technology to eliminate persons deemed to be "terrorists". Many such persons would be considered by Australians to be activists, separatists or insurgents - rather than "terrorists".

The Pentagon's announcement that the United States will modernise its nuclear arsenal, introducing two new "low-yield" submarine-launched nuclear missiles, and resume large-scale bilateral military exercises with South Korea "immediately after" the Paralympic Winter Olympics indicate that tensions will soon rise again on the Korean peninsula.

The fight to recover the Iraqi city of Mosul from occupying Islamic State (IS) began with skirmishes on the approaches to Mosul on 16 October 2016. The battle for Mosul city itself is likely to be protracted and could result in large numbers of civilian casualties.
