PEARLER: Professor Maharg heads up new research centre

Paul Maharg

Professor Paul Maharg likes to climb mountains and in describing his academic career, mountain climbing is an appropriate metaphor.

Head of ANU Laws’ newest research centre, the centre for Profession, Education, and Regulation in Law (PEARL) Professor Maharg is a Scot with a taste for adventure.  Add ‘keen cyclist’ and ‘world renowned expert on online legal education’ to his resume, and you get a picture of an academic who has been climbing his whole career.

With degrees in literature, philosophy, aesthetics and education, Professor Maharg hails from Glasgow and has arrived at ANU via Glasgow Caledonian University, Northumbria Law School, Griffith University and Hong Kong University.

Professor Maharg said the ANU has demonstrated national leadership in research on legal education and the profession more broadly.

“While there are of course researchers in these fields in other Australian universities, including with international reputations, there is no critical mass of researchers in legal education in another higher education institution in Australia”, Professor Maharg said.

“With the potential of around 15 scholars active in this area in the ANU College of Law, we have the opportunity for national and international leadership and PEARL aims to facilitate that.”

Professor Maharg is the author of Transforming Legal Education: Learning and Teaching the Law in the early Twenty-First Century (Ashgate, 2007).

At ANU Professor Maharg will help ANU Legal Workshop develop research projects and produce publications, assist the design and delivery of online education like webcasts and curriculum, and advise on other innovative teaching methods such as simulations and mobile learning projects.

PEARL draws together ANU, national and international scholars to collaborate within ‘research clusters’’ upon such themes as: legal reasoning, legal ethics, problem-based learning, assessment and lawyer/law student wellbeing. For enquiries about joining or creating research clusters at PEARL, please contact Craig Collins (Deputy Director).
