ANU military law expert joins forum on International Humanitarian Law and Conflicts at Sea.

On Tuesday 25 November, Associate Professor David Letts, co-director of the Centre for Military and Security Law, participated in a forum at the University of the Philippines on International Humanitarian Law and Conflicts at Sea.

The forum was organised by the Institute of International Legal Studies of the University of the Philippines Law Complex, in cooperation with the University of the Philippines Asian Center and the Manila Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross,and was held at U.P. Asian Center, Diliman, Quezon City.

The aim of the forum was to educate participants how international law, in particular, international humanitarian law, operates in the event that an armed conflict arises at sea.

Attendees included Philippine Government officials, Philippine Navy and Coast Guard officers as well as a number of senior academics based in universities located in Manila.

Associate Professor Letts spoke on the topic 'Categories of Conflicts at Sea and Their Rules of Engagement' and at the conclusion of the forum he provided a synthesis of the day’s proceedings.
