ANU Law student wins $10,000 Westpac scholarship to study in Asia

Westpac Scholars Karen Luk and Michelle Lindenmayer

ANU Law student Karen Luk and business and economics student Michelle Lindenmayer have been named the first ANU recipients of the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship program, offered through the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation.

Ms Luk has chosen to go on exchange to Hong Kong and Ms Lindenmayer will travel to Singapore for Semester 1, 2016.

Ms Luk will spend a semester studying law at the University of Hong Kong. She said she was excited about the opportunity to have new experiences that would contribute meaningfully to her degree.

“Hong Kong has a uniqueness as an Asian country whose legal system is based on the British common-law system,” Ms Luk said.

“The judicial system in Hong Kong is undergoing a significant period of change and evolution. Comparing its system with the Australian one will be definitely enriching for me.”

During her semester on exchange Ms Luk plans to volunteer at the Hong Kong Legal Aid service and attend an International Asian Students Forum.

Ms Lindenmayer, whose main focus of study is international business with Asia, said applying to spend a semester at the National University of Singapore was an easy decision.

“In Singapore you have the opportunity to live in the biggest business hub in the world,” she said.

After her exams, Ms Lindenmayer wants to volunteer for a Mongolian firm, where she will be able to put her knowledge in business and micro-finance into practice.

Both Ms Luk and Ms Lindenmayer plan to make Asia their home after they graduate.

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship, worth $10,000, provides students with the opportunity to spend a semester studying at a leading Asian university and enhance their experience through a range of opportunities including internships, volunteer experience or language courses.

Applications close November 30 for the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship to be awarded to two ANU students for Semester two 2016.
