ANU Law Professor Mark Nolan will on 15 March shave his head and beard for the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave in support of his friend and former Dean, Professor Michael Coper.
Professor Nolan, who is less than $400 short of his $2,000 goal, will go under the shaver at 3pm in the breezeway below Building 6, with the most generous donor getting to wield the clippers.
“I am dedicating this fundraising effort to ANU College of Law’s beloved Professor Michael Coper, Judy Jones, and family who again are fighting the good fight against cancer,” Professor Nolan says.
“Michael has already bravely defeated cancer once following a brain tumour operation and treatment some time ago. We’re sending our love and wishes to you all at this time.”
Professor Nolan, a criminal law specialist, jokes that he’s keen to receive advice about surviving Canberra weather bald from the likes of Associate Professor Leighton McDonald and other veterans of the smooth head.
“I am curious to see what I may look like bald,” he says, laughing.
“It may be past time to unite my ample front scalp with the bald spot at the rear of my head. I can no longer do a Mohawk or man bun, so now may be the time to investigate different styling options.”
Professor Nolan says a conspiracy from Big Shaver may be afoot.
“Ever since I signed up to the World’s Greatest Shave, my social media has been full of ads for head shavers of all types,” he says, smiling.
“How do they know my current needs? I relented today and made a purchase of a head shaver in response to a Facebook ad today. I hope that relaxes the Facebook algorithm?”
Online donations and messages of support can be made via Mark’s page on the World’s Greatest Shave site.
“Big thanks to everyone who has donated so far,” Professor Nolan says.
“I’m hoping to eclipse my goal for the benefit of many.”
