Professor Andrew Macintosh, Co-Director of the newly established ANU Centre for Environmental Markets at the ANU Law School, has received the Judges’ Commendation in the 2025 Nature Awards for Standing Up for Science (John Maddox Prize).
The Nature Awards are among the world’s most respected honours celebrating individuals who champion science and evidence-based policy, often in the face of adversity.
Professor Macintosh was commended by the judges for his leadership and commitment to maintaining integrity in sustainability initiatives, particularly in relation to his work on the Australian carbon credit unit (ACCU) scheme.
Professor Macintosh has long been recognised for his contributions to environmental policy and market design. In June 2025, he co-founded the ANU Centre for Environmental Markets with Professor Don Butler.
The team led by Professors Macintosh and Butler is widely regarded as a national leader in the design and evaluation of environmental markets. It works closely with governments and private sector partners to ensure environmental markets serve their intended purposes and help improve environmental outcomes.
