A new research project led by scholars from The Australian National University (ANU) College of Law aims to challenge the traditional concept of a legal education by broadening the representation of historically marginalised groups, theories and perspectives.

In a year shaped by global movements including Black Lives Matter and #MeToo, educators and researchers note the timely and practical value of embedding “critical evaluation” skills among the next generation of lawyers.

The New South Wales Government has recently announced a target of reducing the state’s emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 on 2005 levels. Meeting this target while driving increased prosperity requires the realisation of the cheapest sources of abatement.

Consistent with this commitment, there is an opportunity to expand the role of forests in NSW’s climate strategy by stopping logging in state forests.

The Responsible Shareholder

When companies cause harm to the environment, inflict injury on workers, or commit financial fraud, we're used to seeing directors, managers, advisers or regulators come under scrutiny. By contrast, shareholders have been relatively safe from criticism or condemnation in the eyes of the law and conventional morality.

Are shareholders passive agents whose interests start and end with dividends, or do they have a responsibility to drive ‘principled profit’ in the context of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues?

Even before graduating from The Australian National University, Lauren Skinner (BA/LLB (Hons) ’19) knew she wanted to use her law degree to deliver better justice outcomes for First Nations peoples.

From her internship with the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency to her current role as a criminal solicitor at the Aboriginal Legal Service, Lauren has always been driven to use her legal skills and knowledge to address inequality and injustice.

Sixteen alumnae from The Australian National University (ANU) College of Law have been named as finalists in the 2021 Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards.

Among the outstanding alumnae being recognised for their work in the legal profession is Elizabeth Tsitsikronis (GDLP '09, LLM '18), who was named as a finalist in two categories: Indigenous Lawyer of the Year and Innovator of the Year (Individual).

The Australian National University (ANU) Ashurst Novice Moot Competition concluded last week, with the grand final conducted over Zoom on Monday 11 October.

The 2021 competition was a great success and attracted a record-breaking 30 ANU teams, comprised of both Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Juris Doctor students.

ANU Gender Identity + Sexuality Law Moot goes ‘from strength to strength’ in second year

The University of Auckland has won the second Australian National University (ANU) Gender Identity + Sexuality Law Moot, edging out Monash University in an impressive grand final on 12 October 2021.

The Honourable Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG (HonLLD '14), one of three judges in the grand final, described the moot as “going from strength to strength”.

If you’re an international student who has been caught in the COVID-19 study slump, you’re not alone. A recent survey by the Council of International Students Australia found that nearly 87 per cent of international students at Australian universities reported the pandemic had severely affected their studies, while nearly two-thirds reported ‘low’ to ‘very low wellbeing’.
