Winners and Losers in an Age of Economic Globalization

The world seems to be coming apart at the seams. Many of the apparent certainties of the post–Cold War era lie in tatters. In the West, what appeared to be a political consensus on the value of economic integration has given way to increasingly acrimonious debates about who wins and who loses in an age of economic globalization. Are Mexican workers stealing US and Canadian jobs? Has the global 1 percent rigged the game for its benefit? Is China engaged in a malevolent campaign for world domination? Or are we all bound to lose on a planet of untrammelled climate change?

As technological capability advances, so too does the threat of cybercrime. Cyber security is a shared responsibility requiring effective action across all sectors.

In this forum, a panel of leading interdisciplinary experts from law, technology and national security will examine the legal, technical and political challenges of protecting Australia from cybercrime.

The annual Kirby Lecture in International Law: New Zealand, Australia and International Human Rights: 1919-2019

In this tribute to the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG, Sir Kenneth Keith ONZ KBE QC will reflect on international human rights issues in which Australia and New Zealand have engaged over the past century. Why have the members of the three branches of government of the two countries taken concordant or discordant positions on those matters? What roles have the academy and the wider public played?

Refreshments will be served from 5.30pm.
