With the first announced instance of an Australian dual citizen, Khaled Sharrouf, having his citizenship stripped, CIPL invites you to a seminar around the recent release of Kim Rubenstein’s 2nd edition of Australian Citizenship Law (Thomson Reuters, December 2016).
Professor Rubenstein will highlight the new developments in this second edition including the provisions introduced in December 2015 used to strip Sharrouf of his citizenship.
Jacqui Field, who worked with Professor Rubenstein in updating aspects of the book, particularly those specifically dealing with children, will also discuss her contributions.
Dr Suzanne Akila will also provide some reflections on dual citizenship.

Professor Kim Rubenstein »
Professor Rubenstein’s expertise in citizenship law, through her book, scholarly articles and book chapters is of significance to other academic scholarship, teaching, as well as public policy. Kim was appointed a consultant to the Commonwealth in its redrafting of Australian citizenship legislation, resulting in the 2007 Act and later was a member of the Independent Expert Committee set up to review the Australian Citizenship Test that reported in 2008. In 2012 she was appointed an ANU Public Policy Fellow and was named in the first batch of Westpac '100 Women of Influence' Australian Financial Review awards for her work in public policy. In October 2013 she was awarded the inaugural Edna Ryan award for 'leading feminist changes in the public sphere'.

Jacqueline Field is an Australian lawyer. She has been working with Kim Rubenstein in the area of citizenship law since 2012, including on the second edition of Rubenstein’s book Australian Citizenship Law in Context. Jacqueline is currently based in Singapore and has previously worked with a regional nongovernmental organization that advocates for migrant worker rights.

Dr Suzanne Akila »
Suzanne Akila is Assistant Director in the International Legal Branch at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She completed her PhD as a Sir Roland Wilson Foundation scholar at the Centre for International Governance and Justice at the Australian National University. She has also served as a Senior Legal Officer at the Office of International Law in the Australian Attorney-General’s Department and a criminal prosecutor with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. She teaches in the Public International Law stream of the LLM programme at the Australian National University.
