Student competitions

The ANU College of Law and/or the ANU Law Students Society support mooting and negotiation teams in a variety of international and national competitions. Please note that participation in all competitions is not guaranteed for any given year.

International competitions

Phillip C Jessup Competition

The Phillip C Jessup is the world’s largest international law mooting competition.  It has been running since 1960, and has participants from over 550 law schools in over 87 countries.  The Australian rounds are held at ANU in February every year.   ANU teams have a strong history in the Jessup Moot competition, including winning the Australian rounds in 2016 and the international rounds in 2010.

NLU Delhi- Herbert Smith Freehills International Negotiation Competition

The NLU Delhi-Herbert Smith Freehills International Negotiation Competition began in 2014, with ANU winning the inaugural competition.  ANU has participated in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot

The national finals of the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot are held at ALSA every year.  The winning team of the ALSA rounds competes in the international rounds in Hong Kong.

The John H Jackson ELSA WTO Moot

The ANU College of Law supported a team to go to the John H Jackson ELSA WTO Moot in 2019 (formerly known as the EMCC WTO Moot). The John H Jackson WTO Moot is the pre-eminent international trade law moot in the world. There are 5 regional rounds, from which the top 20 teams go to the WTO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland to compete in the finals in June 2019. In 2018, the ANU team won the Asia-Pacific Regional Round and made it to the quarterfinals in Geneva.

The Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition (INC)

The Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition (INC) is Japan’s peak international mooting competition, attracting 20-30 of Japan’s top law schools, as well competing teams from Hong Kong, Korea, Mongolia and Singapore. Australia has been an invited participant from the beginning of the competition and we compete as a national (rather than an institutional) team, Team Australia. Applications open in April each year.
