McKay receives C.A.S Hawker Scholarship

Daniel McKay, BA (Hons) '16, LLB (Hons) '16

Daniel McKay has received a prestigious C.A.S Hawker Scholarship, valued at up to $50,000. He will use the scholarship to start a Master of Philosophy degree in the UK later this year. His honours research was awarded the Mick Williams Prize.

Rosamond Bing Annouced CEO for Ministy of Lands

Rosamond Bing, LLB '99, GDLP '99, LLM '05

Rosamond Bing has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Tongan Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. She has been a member of the Tongan Bar since 2001 and has extensive knowledge in administrative law and land law.

Owen-Jones Appointed Australian Ambassador to Morocco

Berenice Owen-Jones, BEc ’84, GradDipIntLaw ’87

Berenice Owen-Jones has been appointed as Australia’s first resident Ambassador to Morocco. She is a career officer with DFAT and has held a range of positions including Director of Studies at the Diplomatic Academy and at the Australian Embassy in Paris.

Former colleagues, friends and family have paid tribute to former ACT parliamentarian and Canberra lawyer, Jayson Hinder. He was remembered for his love of cars, motorbikes and sport and for his service to the Canberra legal sector and wider community.

Mark Tierney has been appointed a Consulting Principal at NewLaw firm, Kepoint Law. He specialises in insolvency and commercial litigation and will be based in the firm’s Sydney office.

James Morris, GDLP ‘03

James Morris has been promoted to Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright. He is a banking and finance lawyer based in the Sydney office. In 2016 he won “Special Counsel of the Year” at Lawyers Weekly’s Australian Law Awards.

Julia Scott has been appointed a Solicitor in Gilbert + Tobin’s Perth office. Julia previously worked as a Graduate and Corporate Lawyer for Bis Industries. She is also a member of the Australia Indonesia Business Council.

Melanie McKean has been appointed a Partner in the Canberra office at Henry Davis York. She was previously a Partner at HWL Ebsworth. She brings significant expertise in Commonwealth government practice.

Benjamin Marshall has been appointed a partner in the Holding Redlich Melbourne office. He is based in the workplace relations and safety group. He previously worked at Arnold Bloch Leibler in employment law for ten years.

Frances Forbes Society Essay for Australian Legal History

Daniel McKay has won the Tertiary Student category in the Forbes Society Essay Competition. His essay was titled, Under the Crown: Evolving Interpretations of the Office of Australian Governor-General as Constitutional Link to the British Empire 1890-1931.
