Chief Judge Pascoe appointed to the Family Court

Justice John Pascoe AC CVO , BA ’69, LLB (Hons) ‘71

The Honourable John Pascoe AC CVO has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Family Court commencing 13 October 2017. He has served as the Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia since 2004.

Justice Penfold to retire from ACT Supreme Court

The Hon Justice Hillary Penfold PSM QC, BA '75, LLB (Hons) '77

Justice Hillary Penfold will retire in early 2018 after a decade on the bench of the ACT Supreme Court. She was the first female resident judge of the ACT Supreme Court and has been described as a “trailblazer” for women lawyers.

Fantin appointed District Court Judge

Tracy Fantin, BA (Hons) ’88, LLB (Hons) ’88

Cairns barrister Tracy Fantin has been named a District Court Judge of Queensland. She is highly experienced in planning, environment and local government matters and in 2016 was named Regional Woman Lawyer of the Year by the QLD Women Lawyers Association.

Vale Dr Karl Alderson PSM

Dr Karl Alderson PSM, BEc ’92, LLB (Hons) ’94, GDLP ’95

Distinguished Commonwealth and ACT public servant Dr Karl Alderson passed away after a long illness. He has been remembered as the key architect of Australia's counter-terrorism laws and as a "giant" of the public service.

Adrian Piccoli reflects on his political career

Adrian Piccoli, BEc '92, LLB '93

Adrian Piccoli is profiled as an outgoing NSW Member of Parliament. He retires as the state Member for Murray after an almost 20-year career as a politician. He will take up the role as director of a newly created institute for education with UNSW.

Leon announced as new Secretary of DHS

Renee Leon PSM has been appointed Secretary of the Department of Human Services. She was previously Secretary at the Department of Employment having also held senior roles in Attorney-General’s and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Kerri Hartland promoted to Secretary

Kerri Hartland, MLegStud’ 96

Kerri Hartland has been promoted to Secretary of the Department of Employment. She has extensive experience across the Commonwealth Government and was the first woman to serve as Deputy Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

Liz Huang Hughes-Brown honoured with 2017 President’s Medal

Liz Huang Hughes-Brown , BAsianStudies ’02, LLB (Hons) ’03, GDLP ’05, GCertAusMigLaw ’16

Liz Huang Hughes-Brown was presented with the 2017 ACT Law Society’s President’s Medal which recognises significant contributions to the law and justice in the ACT community. Liz is a former refugee who is now the Principal Lawyer of Welcome Legal.

Belinda Miller named as 2017 ACT Young Lawyer of the Year

Belinda Miller, BAsiaPacStudies ’13, LLB (Hons) ’13, GDLP ‘16

Belinda Miller has been recognised with the 2017 ACT Young Lawyer of the Year Award. She is an Employment and Discrimination Lawyer at the Women’s Legal Centre and is a mentor to many female law students in the ACT.

Nick Crennan has been announced as the next Managing Partner of Colin Biggers & Paisley from 1 October. He has been with the firm for almost 30 years including as Partner in the construction and engineering group and Deputy Head of the group.
