ANU Central Funding

ANU Major Equipment Grants

The Sub-Committee on Major Equipment Expenditure (MEC) invites proposals for the purchase of large equipment for research purposes in the following categories:

  • Providing financial support for ANU Led ARC- Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities Program (LIEF) proposals
  • Providing financial support for Externally Led ARC- Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities Program (LIEF) proposals
  • Providing financial support for ANU researchers submitting Major Equipment proposals that fall outside the ARC- Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities Program (LIEF). Applications can be made to purchase research Library Collections.

The MEC will consider eligible proposals for funding equipment costing between $50,000 and $500,000. Bids for library collections will not be bound by the $50,000 lower limit, but requests should be linked to specific areas of research.

ANU Linkage Pilot Project Fund

The ANU Linkage Pilot Project Fund seeks to identify ANU researchers who are able to demonstrate a potentially viable pilot project involving one or more industry partners which can then be developed to apply for ARC Linkage Project funding within the next year. Mentoring support will be available, both for the researchers and their local area administrators, to ensure that the budding applications have the greatest internal support possible for success with the ARC.

Publication Subsidies

The Vice-Chancellor allocates funds for Publication Subsidies to assist the commercial publication of the results of academic research of staff members or students of the University that are unable (or unlikely to be able) to be published by an independent commercial publisher without financial assistance. Applications are called for once a year and the maximum amount for any one subsidy is usually $2,500. Each subsidy is discrete and no long standing commitment will be made towards the costs of ongoing publications such as journals or other series. In practice this has meant that subsidies are granted for books but not for journals, and certainly not for journal articles. Translations of works into or from English are unlikely to be supported unless they are of exceptional literary or scholarly merit. In some circumstances, subsidies may be granted for publication of non-print media, eg. CD Rom. Internally produced monographs or collections of seminar papers are not eligible for assistance.

Travel Grants

The Vice-Chancellor has agreed to make available $500,000 per year in 2007, 2008 and 2009 to support travel by recently appointed and/or junior staff to further their ANU careers. Applications are invited from both academic and general staff. The purpose of the program is to provide recently appointed and/or junior staff with a significant career development opportunity through enabling:

  • academic staff to visit colleagues, enhance their academic profile and develop research and educational partnerships
  • general staff to broaden their experience of higher education management through exposure to other systems.
