Background The Freilich Foundation, with support from the ANU National Institute of Social Sciences and Law, is holding the second of its biennial summer schools for teachers working in Australian schools.

The Freilich Foundation exists for the study of, and research into, the causes, the histories and the effects of ethnic, cultural, religious and sexual bigotry and animosity, and the exploration of how such intolerance can be combated. The summer school is an educational program aimed at promoting co-existence and tolerance in Australian schools and wider society.
About the 2009 Summer School The theme of this Summer School is Religion and Bigotry.

Societies divide themselves on the basis of among other things, religious belief. To what extent is religious belief therefore associated with bigotry? This question is multilayered and occurs in many different contexts.

The relationship of bigotry with religion will be examined in the context of current social issues looked at from different interdisciplinary perspectives. Inevitably this will lead to discussions on the relationship of religion with law and politics in current Australia. Equally the question of bigotry will occur not only as a phenomenon between religions but also within religions.

The Freilich summer school provides an environment where participants from a variety of educational backgrounds can discuss these important questions with leading scholars at the ANU and elsewhere. It is a rich learning experience which past participants have found an invaluable professional and personal experience
.
Venue The Summer School will be held at Old Canberra House (Building #73) Lennox Crossing, The Australian National University, Canberra, ACT. Campus map
